Brașov is the largest city in a mountain resorts area. It is located in the central part of the country, about 166 km North of Bucharest. Brașov is surrounded by the Carpathians and is part of the Transylvania region. The old city is very well preserved.

Biserica Neagră (The Black Church) – a Gothic style church – the building dates from 1477, when it replaced an older church (demolished around 1385). It gained its name after being blackened with smoke by the 1689 great fire.

Another very important part of the tour is the Brașov Citadel Fortress. It was built in wood in 1524 and was replaced with a stone structure in the 16th century, only to be abandoned in the 17th century after technological innovations made cannons stronger than the building.

The Saxons in Brașov set themselves to build fortifications around their town. Most work was done between 1400 and 1650. Of the original seven bastions, only a few have survived: Graft Bastion and The Blacksmiths’ Bastion. On the west side of the wall, walk along picturesque Behind the Walls Street (Strada După Ziduri) to catch a glimpse of the 15th century White and Black Towers. Follow the city wall southeast to the fairy-tale Catherine’s Gate, the only original gate to have survived the test of time. Nearby is the classicist Schei Gate, built in 1827.
